WHO THIS IS FOR

R&D, Manufacturing, or Product Development teams that are…

  • Looking to develop best-in-class cannabis concentrates (e.g., crumbles, batters, sugars)
  • Developing new formulas with TBF oil for the first time
  • Evaluating TBF oil as a replacement for in-house cannabis terpenes
  • Evaluating TBF oil as a replacement for botanical or synthetic terpenes
  • Looking to update in-market TBF oil formulas with current market trends

Required Materials

Formulation Steps

1. Set up the experiment. Test one variable at a time. These variables may be:

    • Essential oil for flavor
    • Essential oil incorporation rate
    • New types of concentrates

2. Break up your selected concentrate as needed.

Concentrates range in their consistency. Those on the “very dry” end of the scale will need to be broken up more than those that are very wet. Concentrates will also need to be broken up if they contain lumps

For crumble, use a potato masher to break it up until it takes on a badder-like consistency.

For sugar, use a potato masher to break it up until it is uniform and smooth.

3. Add 5 grams of your selected concentrate to a 50 ML glass.

The amount of cannabis essential oil you add to your mixture will impact how strong the aroma and flavor is in the final product. If you’re new to mixing, we recommend experimenting with no more than five grams of concentrate until you find your ideal flavor/aroma strength to avoid wasting some of your concentrate.

4. Plan your dilution ratio. Cannabis essential oil should make up 1% to 5% of your final product. Though you should always follow any local/state dilution ratio regulation as appropriate, we recommend starting at 2% of total mass and increasing the amount until you’re satisfied with the consistency and the aroma.

5. Weigh out the essential oilMove your concentrate to a scale in order to weigh and mix in the desired amount of essential oil to reach your percentage goal. Use this calculator to get the required amounts of each ingredient.

6. Mix the formulation: Once you weigh the essential oil in, use a small stainless steel spatula to thoroughly mix the formulation in a stainless steel dish.

7. Transfer, seal and store: Transfer the formulation to storage packaging (glass jar) and securely seal. Store in the refrigerator until ready to use.

8. Record observations. During sample review, use a scoring rubric to record your observations. Check out and feel free to use this Concentrates R&D Evaluation Guide.
